Movies
The Angry Birds Movie – The Angry Birds Movie is probably several years too late to really live up to the massive hype that the franchise once held and almost seems now like a desperate attempt to stay relevant. Vaguely connected to the series of games (and you wouldn’t get this plot from any of the trailers) but Red and other birds attend an anger management class while Green Pigs from a neighboring island come to settle. At first the birds are accepting but they soon learn that the Pigs have been stealing their eggs and Red and the class must team up to take down the pigs. Stars Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader, and Peter Dinklage. Rated PG.
God’s Not Dead 2 – God’s Not Dead 2 is the sequel to the first God’s Not Dead from 2014. The movie has a high school teacher answer a question about Jesus in relationship to Martin Luther King Jr. and for some reason is asked to apologize but doesn’t. The school board suspends her, then threatens to take away her teaching certificate (are they even allowed to do that? I don’t know the teaching system). Going to court, she hires a young atheist lawyer to defend her against the ACLU who is trying to persecute her. Because of course. Stars Melissa Joan Hart, Jesse Metcalfe, David A. R. White, Hayley Orrantia, Sadie Robertson, Fred Thompson, Robin Givens, Ray Wise, and Ernie Hudson. Rated PG.
Raiders! The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made – Raiders! has been a long time coming, we originally mentioned it way back in episode 34 and is now finally out on video. The documentary follows two friends that made a shot for shot remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark, save for one scene that was too technically difficult until they reunite years later to attempt the final scene. After finally making its premiere at SXSW, the documentary is finally out on video. Not Rated.
TV
I won’t be covering most of the TV releases this week in interest of time
Gotham: Season 2 – Don’t watch Gotham unless you want really terrible non-Batman.
Power Rangers Megaforce: The Complete Season & Power Rangers Super Megaforce: The Complete Season – After a really long time of sporadic individual volume releases, you can finally get both seasons in much better season sets. Not Rated.
Cartoon/Anime
Blood Blockade Battlefront – We LOVE Blood Blockade Battlefront and can’t speak of it highly enough. If you like comedy and weird scifi, then you’ll love this series based on the manga by the creator of Trigun. Leonardo Watch goes to Hellsalem’s Lot (Former New York City) to try to find a cure for the loss of his sister’s sight and try to restore her health and ends up joining the secret organization of Libra. Libra watches over the city and protects it from the worst of the supernatural influences that now plague the city. Blood Blockade Battlefront was one of the second wave of Broadcast Dubs, that had a disruption of having its last episode delayed. But in my opinion, this series alone helped to prove the viability of Broadcast Dubs to me as well as the benefit of a Funimation All-AccessPass so I recommend the show to EVERYONE. My only question is if this set includes the new OVA episode that recently came out. Not Rated.
Assassination Classroom: Season One, Part Two – The second half of the hit anime that started out as a Broadcast Dub is finally out to complete season one. As E-Class continues to try to take out their ultra fast tentacled teacher and take on the oppressive main school at the same time, Kuro-sensei continues to help the students brush up on their assassination skills. Not Rated.
Check out this trailer for the first set and this clip from this second set.
Sailor Moon Crystal: Set 1 – Finally after its premiere on Hulu, the first part of the Sailor Moon remake with the same cast as the redub of the original series. So if you liked what they did with that, you should like this version, though we hear the animation quality gets better after the first season. Not Rated.
Trinity Seven – This is a dubbed release from Sentai Filmworks! This is the complete series with 12 episodes and follows Arata Kasuga as the Black Sun causes elements to start to break down and his childhood friend and cousin disappear. Arata learns he’s a candidate to be a demon lord and when he goes to a new school called Royal Biblia Academy, 7 witches representing the 7 deadly sins hold the key to putting the world back together. Now this isn’t rated, but it’s pretty clear from the back cover that his is a more adult show so be prepared going in. Not Rated.
Punch Line – A sub only release from Sentai Filmworks, Punch Line seems to be one of those shows that’s easier to watch then to really describe. Yuta Iridatsu is kicked out of his body after being held hostage in bus hijacking. In order to reenter his body, he’s guided by a cat spirit and protect his 4 female house mates but if he catches the girls in revealing undergarments (panties, bikinis, etc) then apparently he’ll cause the end of the world by having a meteor strike the planet. Definitely weird sounding. Not Rated.
