New Releases for January 27, 2015

Book of Life [Blu-ray]

Book of Life – Book of Life is from the newer studio ReelFX (in Dallas!) and produced by Guillermo Del Toro about the Day of the Dead. Two Gods make a wager on who gets to rule over the worlds of the Afterlife by using proxies Manolo and Joaquín on who would marry their friend Maria. As the years go by, and the time for the wager to be fulfilled, Manolo is killed in a trick and must travel the underworld during the day of the dead to return to his love and save his town. We can confidently say that this is the best work that Channing Tatum has ever done. It’s a very fun movie (that even explains why they are puppets) and is the movie we highly recommend this week. Stars Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Christina Applegate, Ron Perlman, Danny Trejo, Ice Cube, and Cheech Marin. Rated PG.

Fury [Blu-ray]

Fury – The newest WWII movie, Fury, stars Brad Pitt as an army sergeant leading a five person team in a tank. When their gunner is killed and replaced by a rookie, they are forced behind enemy lines and have to battle against overwhelming odds to win a battle against the Nazis. Stars Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña, Jon Bernthal, Jason Isaacs, and Scott Eastwood. Rated R.

The Judge (Blu-ray + DVD)

The Judge – Robert Downey, Jr. stars as Hank, a big time Chicago lawyer that goes back home when his estranged father is suspected of murder. Choosing to defend his father, he’s forced to stay in his hometown and reconnect with his family and his past. Stars Robert Downey, Jr., Robert Duvall, Vera Farmiga, Billy Bob Thornton, Vincent D’Onofrio, Leighton Meester, Dax Shepard, and Balthazar Getty. Rated R.

Before I Go To Sleep [Blu-ray]

Before I Go To Sleep – Before I Go To Sleep is based on the novel of the same name about a woman, who due to a brain injury 10 years earlier, wakes up each morning with no memory of before the accident. Keeping a video diary, she soon starts to realize that the things she’s been told by those around her may not be the truth. Stars Nicole Kidman, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, and Anne-Marie Duff. Rated R.

Masterpiece: Downton Abbey Season 5 [Blu-ray]

Masterpiece: Downton Abbey – Season 5 – As the title says, Downton Abbey season 5. I’ve also have a newfound appreciation for Hugh Bonneville after seeing him in Galavant and Paddington. Not Rated.

Justice League: Throne of Atlantis (Blu-ray + DVD)

Justice League: Throne of Atlantis – The newest DC Animated feature, this though unclear if this is following some sort of continuity or is just an original story. This time it focuses on Aquaman (aka Arthur Curry) as he becomes Aquaman and attempts to be cool. Now the good news (if you liked the new incarnation) is that this film seems to follow the New 52 version of Aquaman. Though the bad news is that this is a sequel to Justice League: War, which wasn’t pretty terrible. Though even better news is that it comes with bonus cartoons including the best version of Aquaman, the Batman: The Brave and The Bold version. It’s Outrageous! Stars Matt Lanter, Sam Witwer, Jason O’Mara, Shemar Moore, Jerry O’Connell, Christopher Gorham, Rosario Dawson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Astin, and Harry Lennix. Rated PG-13.

Log Horizon: Collection 2 [Blu-ray]

Log Horizon: Collection 2 – A dub release from Sentai Filmworks! The part two of Log Horizon, where the video game world has combined with the real world and people must try to stay alive in the new game world. Sounds very much like SAO but instead of having their minds trapped in the game, they really are in a world that becomes the game. Not Rated.

Maid Sama [Blu-ray]

Maid Sama! – Amazingly a second dub release from Sentai Filmworks! Though this one is a bit more frustrating than some of the other Sentai releases as this is one of the series that they had previously released sub only and a couple years later decide to dub it. However I am in full support of the dub because this is a great funny series about a female student counsel president that has to work the evening at a maid café. So far she’s been able to keep her secret until her rival Usui (who has the hots for her) finds out her secret and then proceeds to visit the café every day. Not Rated.

Lupin the 3rd: Napoleon's Dictionary

Lupin the 3rd: Napoleon’s Dictionary – A previously unreleased Lupin the 3rd TV special about Lupin entering a French car race in order to win Napoleon’s dictionary. Sadly looks like sub only but for this classic series that’s better than nothing. Not Rated.

Nisekoi: False Love Blu-ray 2 – A Rightstuf/Aniplex exclusive with the second half of the Nisekoi series. Apparently a girl assassin dresses up as a boy to be a transfer student and try to kill one of the main characters. Also sadly sub only. Not Rated.

Video Games

Dying Light - PlayStation 4

Dying Light – A new zombie game where during the day the character tries to fight and get supplies, while at night the zombies become more aggressive and the character must fight to survive. Available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Rated M for Mature.

Grim Fandango Remastered – There is no link to this one as this doesn’t seem to be sold with any physical copies but the classic LucasArts adventure game about skeletons in a film noir setting as dead travel agent in the land of the dead tries to track down a lost soul. Rated T for Teen.
